Guide to Document Shredder SecurityProtecting your data has probably never been more important. To help decide on the suitability of your shredder solution there are 7 levels of security spanning 3 protection categories. |
7 Protection levels span the 3 increasing categories of protection. These are explained in detail below. |
3 Protection CategoriesProtection categories define the level of protection data require and define the security level to which data belong: Category 1: Normal protection required for internal data intended for and accessible to moderately large groups. Unauthorised disclosure would have limited negative impact on the company. The protection of personal data must be guaranteed. Category 2: High protection required for confidential data restricted to a small group of persons. Unauthorised disclosure would have considerably negative effects on the company and may breach contractual or legal obligations. The protection of personal data must meet strict requirements. Category 3: Very high protection for confidential and secret data, with information being restricted to a very small group of persons known by name and authorised to access it. Unauthorised disclosure may have serious (terminal) consequences for the company and/or may violate trade secrets, contracts and legislation. The protection of personal data must be guaranteed at all cost. |
7 Security LevelsThe security levels defined in the new DIN 66399 standard provide effective protection in destroying a wide range of different data media. Below you will find the seven security levels for the information in original size category based on the example of paper: |
Security Level P-1 Recommended, for example, for data media containing general data that are to be made illegible Max. strip width 12 mm |
Security Level P-2 Recommended, for example, for data media containing internal data that are to be made illegible Max. strip width 6 mm |
Security Level P-3 Recommended, for example, for data media containing sensitive, confidential and personal data Max. shred size 320 mm² |
Security Level P-4 Recommended, for example, for data media containing particularly sensitive, confidential and personal data Max. shred size 160 mm² |
Security Level P-5 Recommended, for example, for data media containing secret data Max. shred size 30 mm² |
Security Level P-6 Recommended, for example, for data media containing secret data demanding exceptionally stringent security measures Max. shred size 10 mm² |
Security Level P-7 Recommended, for example, for data media containing top secret data demanding maximum security measures Max. shred size 5 mm² |
